Layout Chair 142
Summary
The HAY Layout Chair 141-144 series is a contemporary seating collection that explores the contrast between precise structural framing and artistic weaving. This series is defined by its interwoven cord backrests and seats, which create a lightweight, transparent, yet highly durable aesthetic. Ranging from sleek dining chairs to wider lounge versions, the collection highlights functional Scandinavian design. The open-weave construction promotes breathability and provides natural ergonomic comfort as the material contours to the user’s body, making it a perfect choice for modern dining rooms or lounge areas that prioritize natural textures and a sophisticated, airy feel.

Characterised by the opening in the backrest, this defining feature provides greater comfort while giving its appearance a sense of lightness and transparency. Featuring an aluminium five-legged castor base with a height-adjustable gas lift that adds functionality and flexibility, all chair components can be fully disassembled to extend its lifespan and enable refurbishment for long-term use. The shell is crafted from a minimum of 96% post-consumer recycled plastic and offered in a wide range of colours, making Layout a versatile and durable seating solution ideal for most corporate settings and domestic environments.
Julien Renault
French designer Julien Renault grew up near Paris before studying industrial design in ESAD Design & Art School in Reims, France, and ECAL in Switzerland. These two different educations have helped to form his approach to his work – a combination of objective and rational methods with artistic and personal freedom. Currently based from his studio in Brussels, Julien’s ability to find inspiration everywhere means he is not afraid to beautify the ordinary. Convinced that all objects have a subconscious effect on our daily lives, Julien manifests the interconnection between objects and their surroundings in his designs, which he creates for a number of international brands. For HAY, Julien has designed the Pastis Collection, the Layout Collection, the Compass Lamps, and the Deville Collection.
